About

Michael O'Mara, LMHC

I am a mental health counselor (LMHC) who provides counseling and psychotherapy for individual adults in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I have worked with various populations and individuals with a wide array of challenges, including the LGBTQ+ community. I hold both a master's degree and a certificate of advanced graduate study (CAGS) in mental health counseling. I would like to use my training and experience to help you.

As a counselor I use a wellness perspective. I view health in a broad sense that encompasses interrelationships among physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual components. I help adult individuals with many issues including personal growth, setting goals, emotional difficulties, and life stress (relationships, family, work, etc.). To find out how I can use my skills to help you, contact me today.

AREAS OF SPECIALTY

I assist individuals with a wide variety of issues. However, my strengths are in the following areas:

  • Trauma, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Anxiety

  • Phobias

  • Life stressors (e.g. academic/work/family issues, mental health issues that are interfering with daily life)

Methods

The type of therapy I use varies depending on the needs of the individual. I primarily use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational interviewing, and mindfulness. Additionally, I have training in the use of a specialized form of CBT called exposure and response prevention, an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder. I look forward to helping you tailor an individualized plan of treatment that is right for you.
